First, I would like to express my deepest condolences with the Poh family.

Being a birder and conservation activist, I know how difficult it can be to show people the importance of conservation and the incredible and wonderful world of birds. Laurence Poh, with his magnificent talent of Digiscoping gave many a glance of a bird through an image.

Accept my deep sympathy

I only recently discovered Laurence Poh's superb photos of Swifts, and was overwhelmed by their quality. He brought out the exquisite beauty of the living bird and showed it to be a jewel beyond compare. His passing is a terrible loss, not just to his family, but to all of us who try and interest others in the preservation of nature.

I am very saddened by the loss of Laurence Poh. I greatly appreciated the photographic information he was willing to share, as well as the beautiful photos he made available for our perusal.

I never knew Laurence personally but have seen his name in numerous places while surfing the web, he has left his mark in the birding/photography world. If I could I would thank him for sharing his images, knowledge, ideas and passion with us and for introducing me to one of my favourite pastimes...digiscoping. For his family: I'm not sure it would have been possible to accomplish more than what he has in his time here, his legacy will continue for a long, long time. Rest in Peace.

I don't know much about photography but Uncle Laurence's works are beautiful. I'm truly sorry to find out this late. Condolences to all his family.

Laurence Poh was THE original trailblazing digiscoper whose fabulous images have inspired many, many other photograhers, including myself.

So many of his beautiful shots somehow captured both the essence of the particular subject bird and the atmosphere of their surroundings.

I send my sincere condolences to his family and friends and wish them to know the profound importance of his contribution to bird photography and of the high regard in which his work is held across the globe.

He leaves a legacy of wonderful images that will continue to inspire and motivate others long into the future.

I was quite shocked to hear, just a few minutes ago, that Laurence Poh had passed away quite recently.

An ornithologist, and a bird photographer myself (though I use 35mm and film), I have seen and admired his work for some years now. It is quite the most definitive work I have seen on the birds of Malaysia, all the more remarkable since he has photographed many species that have never been photographed before.

It is, now, a matter of regret to me that we never got to meet, though we had corresponded a few times by e-mail.

Admittedly I missed out on Laurence’ digiscoping career, simply because I left Malaysia (and the Malaysian Nature Society - Perak) for Australia many years ago and because I am a nature lover without the passion of photography. But I felt very proud and privileged being present in Taiping at the MNS’ national AGM end of August, when members of the MNS Perak Branch honoured Laurence and his contributions. He couldn’t be present for this event because of his condition, so I didn’t see him that night. However, a few days later in Ipoh, I and some other friends met him by chance, when he returned from his treatment in KL. He looked terribly ill but had a charming smile (which is still with me) when he recognised me – after 10 years. Now Laurence has left this world and with sadness but also gratitude I think of him.

I never had the privilege to meet Laurence Poh. I have however seen the beauty of our world through his eyes. His love of life is evident in his photos and he will surely be mourned by many. Our condolences to the Poh family.

Like most people on the Birds-Pix list I too have never met Laurence personally, but was a fan of him. Specially for the innovation he has shared with this world.

I always will remember Laurence as a great, patience and kind man who taught me the first principles of digiscoping. What a great loss for his family, friends and the bird-pix family. I never met him, but certainly hope I am given the opportunity to do so some time ever.

Laurence is one of the rare people that has been instrumental in helping to fulfill the promise of the Internet as a medium which can build global communities of like-minded individuals who freely share their passions amongst themselves and the world at large just for the

sake of those passions. Digiscoping is a technique that has made it possible for many people to easily take photographs that have low impact on the avian creatures that we love. Setting an example with his website and participation in birds-pix has encouraged others to share their beautiful works simply for the love of birds and nature without a profit motive. This is the digital revolution at its finest. His

example is what originally sent me down the path of becoming a sharer of digital bird content instead of just a guy carrying binoculars looking for birds. I would like to thank him for this as it has brought many, many new friends into my life through birds-pix and my website.

Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to meet Laurence but I almost

feel like I had. His legacy will endure a mighty long time.

Part I

Must all good things come to an end.This year alone I have lost more than one friend. My deepest condolence to the Poh's family, friends and fellow netizens.I've only met Laurence (3X?) on the few occasions at the annual Raptor Watch at Tg Tuan Malaysia. He would set up the most interesting exhibition booth with digital photo enlargements, posters, video presentation etc. I always spend the most time at his booth with Laurence every year and appreciated the info and the effort he put into it esp.fascinated by how he got a power line connected from a distance just for the tv for our viewing. Thats his idea of sharing.

Part II

Before digiscoping was invented, I've to spent a lot of time birding in the field to enjoy sightings of birds. Now I dont get to do those much these days and watching digiscoped images of birds from the internet is the alternative. It brings the birds close and connected to me. Laurence's series of raptors images appealed me the most. His raptor images are close up shot of shy and wary birds that are normally seen as a speck in the sky or an indistinguishable bird/leaf/silhouete at the top of a tall distant tree.I've also many slides of those specks and just to know what it was, I've to put it under magnifying glasses or project it on the wall. That was from shooting with bazooka size telephoto lens.Laurence's technique of shooting behind a telescope was a breakthrough and the answer to photographing birds from a distance. Well done!

Part III

I think he had a great time dwelling in his invention and in his passion for birding. I cant figure out how much and long the time he had to put into shooting, imaging, webdesigning, emailing etc.He would have lived a many lifetimes of mine.His work shall always remain on the web but we will miss him.

Thanks Laurence for bringing the birds to our home.

How I've watched, waited and scanned new photo posts, for the rare and precious new bird digiscope by Laurence Poh; each one a brand new gift of beauty and compassion for nature.

All were exotic birds like none I'd seen before, and each one wild in its native habitat.

Each time I pack my scope and camera with all the excitement of that next unusual photo opportunity, I'll think of Laurence; how great he was to share so freely his innovations, passion, and talent for capturing live birds on a tiny microchip and sending them, free to our desktops.

From far away in Oregon, USA, the digiscoping "community" will feel this loss, and sends our heartfelt condolences to Laurence's family and friends.

I got into digiscoping 2 years ago and came across Laurence's website through google search. I was astonished and amazed when I first set eyes on his incredible photographs and his impressive website. I learned a great deal about the technical aspects of digiscoping from his site and find inspiration from his gallery of beautiful bird photos.

Thank you Laurence for sharing your passion with the world. You will be truly missed. My deepest condolences to the Poh family.

Although I never met you, I feel I lost a close friend.

We first met Laurence on a trip to Cameron Highlands when he was first experimented with digiscoping.

What a long way he has come since then!

A quiet man creative man, always willing and eager to share his knowledge. He saw things so clearly.

Last October the Selangor MNS Bird Group were lucky to have Laurence and Ooi Beng Yean come down to give a digiscoping workshop.

It was a privilege to have met him.

I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Laurence Poh the man who invented digiscoping & gave us all those wonderful bird photos.My sincerest condolenses go out to his family & friends.

Although I never had a great privilege of meeting Laurence in person, I felt a great loss of his passing away as if he is my friend. For the past 2 years, I always got excited when I see his mail popped up as a member of OBP pix group 'cause I know that only great bird pictures will be posted under Laurence Poh. His pictures inspired me to keep enhance my bird photographing skill and lately when I couldn't find time to go out in the field anymore, Laurence would brought me smile everytime I saw his pictures.

I would like to express my deepest condolences to his family and a great salute to Laurence Poh for all the joys he has brought to all of us.

I got to know about digiscoping in 2002 during a Fraser's Hill bird race. I was refered to Lawrence's web page. I was very impressed by the kind of image digiscope can achieve in bird photography. From there, I joined the Oriental bird group and got in touch with many other birders worldwide.

Last Christmas, Lawrence and I was supposed to meet at Fraser's Hill (then visit him at Ipoh). That never happeded as I had to go to India on a wildlife photography assignment. We exchanged e-mails and prayers since then.

Although we never met, his photographs and his dedication to bird photography made such a great impact. His kind heart is felt all over the world.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Laurence though we had communicated many times. A kind and gentle man. He taught us to see the world through new eyes.

My heartfelt sympathies to his wife, children and many friends.

This is a great loss to family and friends. Indeed Laurence had many friends from all over the world. I have not met Mr Laurence Poh before. I don't do digiscoping. But I felt the loss too when Laurence passed away.

I know Laurence through my husband who entered into the world of digiscoping after visiting Laurence's website. He showed me the many beautiful pictures Laurence had taken, which I greatly appreciated. Laurence gave my husband a very healthy hobby - digiscoping the birds and rekindled his love for birdwatching. Our family spent happy time together doing bird watching and digiscoping. Through my husband, I know that Laurence was a selfless man who would share his technique freely. It is indeed a great loss to many to have him go.

May Laurence's family be encouraged by the many good work that he has left behind. May they take pride in this great man.

Digiscoping is all about beating the odds: using a simple digital camera and a telescope to capture a restless bird with 60x magnification or more…Laurence Poh was the first and one of the best in beating the digiscoping odds masterfully, and an innovator with Photoshop processing of his images as well. A tragedy he did not beat the odds with this awful illness ..my condolences to the family.

Digiscoping. What a fantastic idea. It is really amazing how the camera or telescope manufacturers never thought of it. Laurence brought digiscoping into the lives of thousands of bird watchers who may not have been able to afford high-tech camera equipment, but at the same time achieved very good and realistic results. I met Laurence at Tanjung Tuan where we had a little chat about Digiscoping at his stall where he had exhibited some of his pictures. Some of his raptor photographs are really outstanding. He brought a good deal of good into the world.

I was deeply saddened and disappointed at the same time when I received the sad news about Laurence, as I was so very sure he would overcome this unfortunate health problem that had impinged on him. I was in the midst of leading a clean up campaign at the Black-crowned Night Heron heronry in Penang, that we are trying to protect and conserve from development pressure when I got the sad news, it took sometime for the news to sink in and as I went about continuing with the clean up I thought to myself, this is in memory of Laurence. He would have loved to photograph this colony right in the middle of the city.

Laurence was one who was ever willing to share his knowledge and experiences with anyone. He was ever so humble and always acknowledged whatever he learnt from someone. His pioneering work on digiscopey was a great contribution to not only to bird photography but bird conservation itself. I will always cherish the memories of the times I was out birding with him and will never forget his e-mail remark “I was inspired to take up bird photography after seeing your slides” to my comments to his excellent and wonderful bird discope-pix. Needless to say, those slides of mine he had seen in those days, were amateurish compared to his suburb work.

I salute you Laurence, you may not be with us but you will always be with us all.

He was so familiar, though i’ve never met him. His inspiring works must have touched the hearts of many people. After I noticed people using video with a scope in the US in 2000 I bought a cheap scope to use with my CP990. When I went out on the Net to find out how to use it I fouond Digiscopingbirds which told me all I needed to know to start my new hobby. I never met Laurence, just knew him through his brilliant photographs - many of which, with his kind permission, grace my website. But I am sure I speak for many thousands of people around the globe who marvelled at his photographs, and who shared his passion for birds, when I say sincerely that he will be universally missed and that he leaves this world a richer place. I hope there is a heaven filled with bird song; if there is surely Laurence will be at peace there.

Laurence, may you rest in peace. Your life for many was one of sharing and helping and for many of us inspiring us to do better with our bird photography.

Your reputaion has travelled around the world and your work is there for us all to see forever.

I have always admired Laurence for his contributions to Digiscoping. He was very friendly and willing to share his knowledge with many. His passions in nature photography had reached many in Malaysia as well as many people around the world.

You have made many Malaysians proud of you.

I just can remember how kind and helpful was Laurence in the first days of the teaching of his art, how he succeeded to spread it all over the world with such patience and passion. My interest in digiscoping started after i discovered Laurence's birds pix. I have only met Mr.Laurence once during a digiscoping workshop held by Malaysian Nature Society many months ago. Laurence is an unselfish person who willing to share his experience and to give me few hints when i first started digiscoping.
